Donors Choose 2010: Helping Kids Play!

December 29, 2010

Every year, our readers help us select a Donors Choose project to fund.  In 2010, we donated to a preschool class where most of the normally energetic 3 and 4 year olds were overweight and lethargic.  We received some great pictures of the kids enjoying their new play equipment and a thank you note from the teacher.  Now the kids are more active than ever!

“I can’t thank you enough for the donation of this indoor play equipment! I wish you could have seen the looks on the kids’ faces when they opened the boxes. They couldn’t wait to use the tunnel, bouncy balls, parachute, and tent. The play tunnel, especially, has them moving like we’ve never seen before! They’re trikeing, scootering, crawling, hippety-hopping, and running through it. It’s so wonderful to see them engaged in physical activity. The weather’s turning bad this week, and I expect this equipment will be used on a nonstop basis. This wouldn’t be possible without your generosity. Thank you again and again!” – Mrs. M

Donors Choose 2010: Yogalicious!

March 28, 2010

In 2010 we funded Ms. F’s class which is part of a high-poverty community that she says “seems to have forgotten about exercise and good health.”  She’s been teaching her kindergarten class yoga for 30 minutes every week, which her students absolutely love.

While Ms. F’s students are always asking her when they’ll be having their next yoga lesson, the school doesn’t have the funding to purchase yoga mats for the kids.

Ms. F plans to use these mats both to continue teaching her kindergarteners yoga and to show the rest of the faculty how to implement physical activity in their classrooms.

For 2006, The Radial Group has fully funded a nutrition education program for a low-income public school in North Carolina. Nutrition is a key factor in kids’ behavior and ability to learn. This fun program uses colorful Food Pyramid charts, books, and Nutrition Lotto games. Magnetic food sets let kids learn and have fun as they create balanced meals with wipe-off order pads and “play food”.
